Curriculum intent

The Mathematics department aims for students to have the best enjoyment and positive experience of the subject whilst being engaged with their Mathematics, progressing and succeeding. We aim for our staff to be open, supportive and communicative; aspiring for the best in our students by driving them forward in their Mathematics, developing skills for life and passing on our own passion for the subject.

This is exemplified with solving a problem such as: What is the best size of cereal box? Students would have to put together a written mathematical explanation including assumptions, accurate calculations and a conclusion that has a comparative mathematical step.

Every step in solving a problem would have to follow a logical argument drawing on a mixture of topics such as number, shape and space and algebra to represent variables in general cases. Numerical work is used for particular examples which may be completed with or without a calculator depending on the assessment criteria.
